The list doesn’t get any shorter when you think about which email platform to use for your online business….
Flodesk
MailChimp
Kit
ActiveCampaign
MailerLite
AWeber
To be honest, I haven’t used Flodesk (yet), but I’ve heard good things. I’ve recommended MailChimp to very few people (it’s never been my top pick… for so many reasons).
While I started Duett using MailerLite — before there was a free version of Kit — I didn’t see the functionality of MailerLite growing with my business in a way that would be easy and simple to use.
I made a change, and I’m sharing my experience so you can get on the right email marketing platform from the beginning.
When you’re looking for an email platform, here’s what’s it should be able to do…
Organize your opt-ins into individual forms with quick-view stats on conversion rates
Set up simple tags or create custom fields to track important subscriber data
Include/exclude any subscriber from a campaign or sequence within a few clicks
Create an automation that’s easy to view, edit and pause in seconds
Send emails — but never the same email twice
And if you’re done going back and forth, wavering between which platform to use…
I bet you’ll love Kit.
Of course, if you’re happy with your platform and it’s giving you all the functionality you need — and it’s not keeping you from getting the most of it — then stay where you are. I won’t convince you otherwise.
But if your platform has been hard to use, or you can’t find which emails go out to which subscribers, we have a problem.
I started using Kit in 2017 with my personal finance blog. When I founded Duett, I started with MailerLite for 6 months until I was ready to scale up and create an email foundation to support where I wanted to take my online business.
Kit is so easy to use — to click around fast, toggle between emails in a sequence all on one page, and set up automations to know exactly where my readers are in their email journey — it has been worth every penny.
“Yeah, but I need specifics, Allea”
I hear you. In addition to the big factors I listed above, I have many more reasons why Kit is my go-to recommendation for online businesses looking to build a strong email marketing foundation with the opportunity to scale with ease.
Unlike many email service platforms that use lots of images and design-y functions — Kit is considered a text-based platform.
I always include a header image for brand recognition with my clients (and I’d recommend you do the same), though your header doesn’t need to be anything fancy.
But for the most part, the email content is just that — content. It’s not a lot of pictures or columns or formatting.
However, my least favorite thing about image/design-heavy emails… is that the design function may be keeping you from sending emails to your list. And that’s a major downside.
Poor, rotten shame, I say.
With text-based emails, you can focus on the words, the message and your offer (the value you’re providing someone!) and less energy on HOW it’ll look.
Kit allows you to work fast — none of that “open, wait to load, save, go back, open another email” kind of business (seriously, I don’t have that kind of patience). Instead, the platform is robust, yet what I’d call “lightweight.”
You can click between tabs, emails and forms in a FLASH.
If you’ve never been inside of MailChimp, MailerLite or ActiveCampaign…. trust me, this is a BENEFIT. I get all sorts of anxious even thinking about how cumbersome those other platforms are in certain respects.
(To be fair, I do respect ActiveCampaign as a platform, but I went with Kit because simplicity was my primary objective.)
Unlike some platforms (*cough cough* MailChimp *cough*), you don’t have to stumble through an internet maze to find your opt-in forms and the confirmation email for your new subscribers.
Nothing makes you feel silly or like a “bad emailer” like not being able to USE your email service. And some of the most popular services don’t exactly make it easy for you.
Spoiler alert: It’s not you, it’s them.
In Kit, your forms are easy to see, and they’re all in one place. The confirmation emails for each form are easy to access and edit, so you redirect your readers to their opt-in immediately — that’s right, the confirmation email also delivers your freebie in the SAME link.
Plus, Kit has dozens of form options for you to pick from — landing pages, pop-ups and Javascript or HTML forms to embed on your site.

I’m a visual person, so I appreciate Kit’s visual automations to the moon and back.
Just look at this:
Visual automations make it super easy to piece together elements of your platform — subscriber tags, specific forms, email sequences, custom fields, purchases made, events attended, and more — in one place, starting with a trigger of your choice that sets off a chain of events.
Whether it’s a simple setup for a nurture sequence or a more complicated webinar follow-up, Kit’s visual automation feature lets you scale and serve your list well as your business grows.
If you’re ready to dive in, create your account, and get started today.
Or if you’re not sure, you can always start with the free landing page option.
With either option above, you’ll be on your way to an organized, powerful email marketing system that allows you to connect with readers — and serve your ever-evolving business goals — for years to come!
